This on car test doesn t require any tools such as a multimeter or anything else. But if the unit tests good the problem is something else such as a bad voltage regulator pcm or wiring harness. To test for this condition switch the voltmeter to ac voltage with the engine at about 1200 rpm the meter should read 0 volts.
